Davis was raised in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, where he was born and played basketball for Perspectives Charter School in high school, where he had been enrolled since the sixth grade. A math and science institution, Perspectives is a charter school with a solid academic standing but little sports success.

Davis blocked more shots per game than the majority of Division I men’s teams during the 2011–12 NCAA Division I men’s basketball season. In the game against Arkansas on January 17, Davis broke Melvin Turpin and Andre Riddick’s previous record of 83 blocked shots in a season for the men’s basketball team at Kentucky. He scored a game-high 27 points, had 14 rebounds, and had five shots blocked in addition to setting a career-high.
With 116 blocks on February 4 against South Carolina, Davis broke Shaquille O’Neal’s LSU rookie record and set a new SEC freshman record. When number one Kentucky faced up against number five North Carolina on 3rd December, a block of John Henson with four seconds left preserved a 73-72 victory.
