Beginning in August 2001, Hayes contributed for four years to the independent web publication Chicago Reader, where he wrote about state and local politics. Hayes served as an In These Times Schumann Center Writing Fellow from 2005 to 2006. Hayes worked as a contributing writer for The Nation and a Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute from 2006 to 2007.
