He embarked on a dedicated path in Christian ministry while growing up in Fort Worth, Texas. His journey led him to graduate from Eastern Hills High School. In 1970, at the young age of twenty, he was ordained as a pastor and simultaneously got married.
He was also midway through his studies at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, where he excelled and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. By 1976, he and his wife, Deb, welcomed their first child into the world, and he was serving as an associate pastor at Sagamore Hill Baptist Church in Fort Worth, a church led by G. Fred Swank.
During the same year, he successfully completed his studies and received a Master of Divinity degree with honors from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. Four more years passed, and he achieved a Doctor of Ministry degree with a focus on ‘Church and Proclamation.

In 1989, a significant transition occurred when Graham was called to lead Prestonwood Baptist Church, a Dallas megachurch with around 11,000 members. This invitation came after the church’s founding pastor, Bill Weber, admitted to an extramarital affair and resigned.
Despite some initial challenges and Weber’s attempts to regain his former position, Prestonwood’s membership continued to grow by approximately 2,000 members each year. The church’s rapid growth necessitated the construction of a new worship facility, school, and ministry complex in west Plano in 1999, with a capacity of 7,500 seats.
In 2006, Prestonwood expanded by opening its second campus in Prosper, near U.S. Highway 380 and Dallas Parkway. During the same year, the church also enhanced its facilities for PowerPoint Ministries, including an upgrade to High Definition (HDTV), and completed a new children’s wing.
The church achieved a significant milestone in 2018, reaching 43,000 members, with an average weekly attendance of about 17,000 at worship services. Graham’s influence extended beyond his role at Prestonwood Baptist Church. He served as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention for two terms, a significant American Baptist denomination with 16 million members.
He also held the position of president of the SBC Pastor’s Conference. In 2002, during his tenure as SBC president, Paul Pressler, a retired judge from Houston and a key figure in the Southern Baptist Convention Conservative resurgence in 1979, served as the first vice president.
Additionally, Pastor Graham served as the Honorary Chairman of the 2015 National Day of Prayer and was a member of President Donald Trump’s Religious Advisory Council. He participated in the National Prayer Service at the Washington National Cathedral the day after the presidential inauguration.
In May 2022, Dr. Graham’s name was mentioned in a report on carnal abuse within the Southern Baptist Convention. The report revealed that he allowed a youth music minister at Prestonwood Baptist Church, John Langworthy, who had confessed to church officials that he had molested at least one student in the late 1980s, to be quietly removed without involving the police.
This minister, John Langworthy, later went on to become a youth music minister at Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton, Mississippi, where he faced accusations of abusing young boys once again.
