While with Def Jam, Joe Budden released two mixtapes: Mood Muzik: The Worst of Joe Budden on December 9, 2003, and Mood Muzik 2: Can It Get Any Worse? on December 26, 2005. Budden began co-hosting Everyday Struggle, a morning show for Complex, on April 17, 2017, alongside DJ Akademiks and Nadeska Alexis. During the BET Awards pre-show on June 25, 2017, tensions escalated between Budden and Migos member Takeoff after DJ Akademiks questioned Takeoff’s absence on Migos’ hit single “Bad and Boujee.”
This led to Budden walking off-set, sparking a standoff with the group. Migos referenced Budden in their song “Ice Tray,” with Quavo rapping, “If a nigga hatin’ call him Joe Budden.” Budden departed from Everyday Struggle in December 2017.
On May 14, 2018, Budden partnered with Sean Combs and Revolt to create and produce the talk show State of the Culture, which premiered on September 10, 2018. He co-hosted with rapper Remy Ma. Concurrently, The Joe Budden Podcast began touring the United States in the summer of 2018. Budden announced his retirement from rapping during this time.
