Coates started her legal career in Minnesota as an associate lawyer at the Faegre & Benson law firm. She left Faegre to work as an associate at Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman in New York City. As a federal prosecutor, she transitioned from private practice to the US Department of Justice. During the Bush and Obama administrations, she worked as a trial lawyer in the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, where she specialized in upholding citizens’ right to vote nationwide.
She also served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, prosecuting severe felonies such as drug trafficking, use of a weapon while in the commission of a crime, domestic abuse, maltreatment of children, and sexual assault. She is not currently a practicing attorney and is on inactive status with the Office of Lawyer Registration at the Minnesota Supreme Court
