Rigathi Gachagua is a Kenyan politician who was a member of parliament for Mathira Constituency. United Democratic Alliance (UDA) deputy presidential candidate Rigathi Gachagua. Currently, he is the deputy president-elect of Kenya as a result of the 2022 Kenyan general election.

Furthermore, He is the younger brother of the late H. E Nderitu Gachagua, first Governor of Nyeri County. His parents were Mau Mau freedom fighters in Mt. Kenya Forest where Nashashon Gachagua Reriani was building and servicing guns for the freedom fighters.

He is married to Dorcas Wanjiku Rigathi, who is a pastor based in Mathira. The couple met at a visit by then-President Daniel Arap Moi to the University of Nairobi. Gachagua has been married to Pastor Dorcas Wanjiku Rigathi for 35 years, with whom they are blessed with two sons.

He has two sons. The firstborn son, Mr. Kelvin his firstborn son, is a software engineer. The secondborn son is called Dr. Keith Keino, who is a medical doctor but helps the politician run his family business. A spot check by Kenyans.co.ke on the order of merit for the 2010 KCSE examinations, Keith, an Alliance High School alumnus, scored a mean grade of A plain of 86.92 and was ranked 17th nationally. According to the top 100 male candidates nationally, he was ranked 13th.
The 29-year-old joined the University of Nairobi (UoN) to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery. Additionally, he graduated in December 2019 – an achievement that was praised by Gachagua who reminisced of his time at the university where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration and International Relations.

Rigathi Gachagua Career
After graduating, Gachagua was employed for a short time at Kenya’s Ministry of Home Affairs & National Heritage before he joined the Administration Police Institute in 1990. After graduating from the Administration Police Institute, Gachagua was posted at the Office of then-President Daniel Arap Moi, as a District Officer Cadet between 1991 and 1992.
Gachagua then went on to serve as a District Officer in Kakamega, Ng’arua, and Laikipia districts. Between 1999 and 2000, he joined the Kenya School of Government where he graduated with a Diploma in Advanced Public Administration.
Between 2001 and 2006, Gachagua worked as the Personal Assistant to Uhuru Kenyatta, the current President of the Republic of Kenya. Additionally, in the middle of 2007 and 2017, Gachagua remained behind the scenes running his businesses. He served as District Officer In charge of Ng’arua Division, Laikipia District from 1997 to 1999.
He served as Uhuru Kenyatta’s Assistant when he was Minister for Local Government. For four years between 2002 and 2006, Rigathi Gachagua was the custodian of Uhuru Kenyatta’s diary as his PA. As a Kanu presidential candidate in 2002, Mr. Kenyatta traveled with Mr. Gachagua throughout the country.
Rigathi Gachagua Political Career
Gachagua was elected as a member of parliament for the Mathira constituency in 2017. On 15 May 2022, Rigathi was nominated as the running mate to UDA presidential candidate William Ruto under the Kenya Kwanza political coalition. Moreover, others who were eyeing the same position included Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.
Additionally, Kandara MP Alice Wahome, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, and National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi. Rigathi has a chequered past with pending court cases over alleged cases of misappropriation of government funds. Furthermore, on 28 July 2022, a Kenyan court ordered Rigathi Gachagua to reimburse KSh. 202 million (US$1.7 million), finding that the money was derived from corruption
Rigathi Gachagua Mp Mathira
Mr. Gachagua was the Mathira Constituency Member of Parliament since 2017. Mathira is popularly known as Mathira ya Githomo, it has the most educated population in the country. Found right at the foot of Mt Kenya, Mathira is known for growing tea and coffee.
Karatina town is to the east. Gathagua worked in the Office of the President as a District Officer Cadet from 1990. He then rose to Personal Assistant to the Head of Public Service in 1991.
Rigathi Gachagua’s brother Nderitu Gachagua Death
Nderitu Gachagua was born on 29th July 1952. On 24 February 2017 a Kenyan politician who served as the first governor of Nyeri County having been elected in March 2013. On a GNU party ticket alongside deputy governor, Wamathai Samwel Githaiga. Nderitu studied law at the University of Nairobi.
Before becoming governor, he served as the Member of Parliament for the Mathira constituency. Gachagua died on 24 February 2017 at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.
Rigathi Gachagua Wealth Frozen Account
On the list of wealthy industrialists, His billionaire status has been baffling state agencies. Which are now seeking to understand how the Mt Kenya politician made his fortune. The Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) is investigating how Sh12.5 billion passed through. Mr. Gachagua’s three accounts for seven years and whether money laundering was involved.
Before the agency moved in, the MP allegedly withdrew Sh7.3 billion. Moreover, disbursed it to various companies, and invested a portion in some assets. As a result, the agency could only locate Sh5.2 billion.
Rigathi Gachagua Frozen Account
The three accounts are being held at Rafiki Micro Finance and ARA has written to the bank seeking clarification on the money trail. Additionally, In one of the accounts, the MP allegedly received Sh5.83 billion. Withdrew Sh5.831 billion, leaving a balance of Sh773,000.
In the second, a fixed deposit account, he allegedly received a total of Sh827 million, and Sh792.9 million left the account, leaving a balance of Sh35 million. It is this money trail that is exciting ARA investigators. Mr. Gachagua may, in the interim, lose Sh200 million, which has since been frozen.
To the state if an application by ARA goes through. Additionally, in the third, also a fixed deposit account, the MP is alleged to have received Sh5.87 billion. And Sh705 million was withdrawn, leaving a balance of Sh165 million when the account was frozen in May.
Court documents showed that Mr. Gachagua received a total of Sh347 million. Additionally, from several companies, including Sh112 million from Encarta Diagnostics, and Sh7.5 million from Wamunyoro Investments. Sh58 million from Rapid Medical Supplies, and Sh103 million from Specific Supplies.

He said he is currently worth Sh600 million minus the frozen funds. Inclusive of the frozen funds, the UDA deputy presidential candidate said his total net worth is Sh800 million as a Kenyan politician.
