Heitzig is the founder and senior pastor of Calvary Albuquerque, a large evangelical church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The church has an average weekly attendance of over 20,000 people and is one of the largest churches in the United States.
In 1982, he initiated a home Bible study that eventually evolved into Calvary of Albuquerque. Between 1988 and 1989, Calvary of Albuquerque gained recognition as one of the rapidly growing churches in the United States. By 2009, it had become one of the 15 largest churches in America, with an average weekend attendance of 13,000.
Following a brief pastorate in San Juan Capistrano at Ocean Hills from 2004 to 2006, Heitzig returned to lead Calvary of Albuquerque as the senior pastor in 2006, succeeding the previous pastor, Pete Nelson.
Heitzig is actively involved on several boards of directors, including Samaritan’s Purse. Additionally, he holds the position of Associate Professor of Pastoral and Biblical Studies at Veritas International University.
Annually, Heitzig conducts a week-long teaching seminar at The Cove, the Billy Graham Training Center in North Carolina. He is also a frequent guest speaker at Franklin Graham Festivals and Harvest Crusades with Greg Laurie.
