At age 6, he participated in his first school play. A year later, at age 7, he appeared in his first professional performance at the Academy of Music. Gray graduated in 2014 with a theater degree from The Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts. Gray was allowed to play Jamal on On My Block (2018–2021) after performing a chemistry read for the producers.
It is his debut leading-man performance. He identified with Jamal in the part, which attracted him to it. In an interview with The Fader, he said that he also wanted to broaden his experience with physical comedy, a genre he had never worked in before.
Gray had a minor role in the 2019 Netflix limited series When They See Us. Gray released his debut single, “Old Thing Back” in June 2018. His EP Easy Daze was released on his birthday on August 7, 2018. He compared the style to Usher’s album Confessions. He acted in school plays when he was a kid. Gray caught the attention of his classmates and teachers with his humorous performances, he pursued acting because of their encouragement.
