Dan Shugart Career
Dan accepted a part-time position as a news reporter at Pensacola’s WBSR-Radio. He was hired by WEAR in March 1981 after serving as the play-by-play announcer for the Pensacola Wings semi-pro football club that fall. Up until he was given the position of sports director in December 1982, he worked as a weekend sports anchor and general assignment news reporter.
He entered UCLA just in time to see the final two years of the legendary John Wooden basketball dynasty after completing high school in San Diego. After playing basketball and baseball in high school, he understood that his competitive career was over when he was 19 years old. So in college, he started playing rugby and recreational volleyball. It was a smart idea to have a coed division in volleyball. Debatable was rugby, which required three knee operations.
His erratic upbringing (ten homes in 17 years) carried over into his academic career, which saw him veer from a Political Science major to Psychology, Philosophy, and finally History after developing a strong interest in the field (and after the dean of students suggested it was time for his career to move on). He earned a history degree from UCLA in 1979 despite all academic odds. Dan performed play-by-play for high school football matches on WSRE-TV in the 1980s in addition to his responsibilities at WEAR when he covered Emmitt Smith, Derrick Brooks, and the great championship teams of Pensacola’s Golden Age.
He worked as a freelance broadcaster for PJC (now PSC) baseball and basketball games on WSRE; he was the radio voice of the Pensacola Tornados professional basketball club for five years. Dan also called hockey games for the Tornados and Pensacola Ice Pilots on WEAR, and he called baseball games for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos on WEAR.
He was given the Southern League Media Award in 2015 and twice won the AP Florida Top Story Award. Moreover, he was named Florida’s broadcaster of the year by Special Olympics for his work with that organization, coached young basketball players, and joined his father in the Pensacola Sports Association Hall of Fame in 2006.
