Burrill began his career working for numerous radio stations in northern Ontario. He moved to Toronto in 1997 to work as a news producer for CityTV’s Breakfast Television. He soon became an on-air personality as the sports specialist for Breakfast Television and CityNews at Noon. He was then moved to CityNews at Six and CityNews Tonight Weekend Editions.
In 2007, Burrill was hired by Rogers Media when the company acquired the Citytv stations. He joined Sportsnet in 2017, where he worked as a reporter/anchor covering the Leafs, Blue Jays, and Raptors. He also hosted the morning show Sportsnet’s Starting Lineup with Brady & Price.
On January 19, 2010, when Rogers Media undertook a restructuring of its television operations, there were significant layoffs among Citytv staff members, leading to the cancellation of various newscasts, including weekend editions. During this period, Hugh Burrill transitioned from his previous role to become a sports reporter and served as a backup for Kathryn Humphreys, the sports anchor. Weekend editions of CityNews were eventually reinstated in March 2011, prompting Burrill’s return to his role as the weekend sports anchor.
Subsequently, Burrill made the decision to shift his focus towards sports reporting on CityNews Channel, the network’s 24-hour news channel, thus stepping away from his position in the weekend news segment. Burrill retired from broadcasting in 2021 to become a Brand Ambassador for Golf Town. He is still a regular contributor to Sportsnet and other media outlets.
