She loved it and she would record her version of music videos and news stories. little did their parents know they had planted a little seed in her journalism career. She got her first experience in news writing for her high school newspaper, the tiger tales. Her involvement in radio and television started in college.
She went to Howard University in Washington D.C and still say choosing Howard was one of her best decision till now. Furthermore, her professors were encouraging and helped her secure great internships with various networks and local television stations. During her junior year, she was honored with the White House Correspondents’ Association Scholarship. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama presented her with the award. It was the highlight of her undergrad career- and possibly life,
After graduation, she moved from Washington, D.C. to the eastern shore of Maryland to work for WMDT-TV. Additionally, she was reporting on chicken farms, crabbing, and NASCAR. It was a great experience and she did everything. Fortson was a reporter, anchor, producer, photographer- and one day even served as a floor director because someone didn’t show up. She spent just under two years in Maryland before moving to Louisville, KY to work for WAVE-TV.
Fortson now has a love for the Kentucky Derby, hot chicken, and so many great people in the Bluegrass state. Fortson reported and anchored in Louisville for two years before moving to the Bay Area! She moved there for love and has fallen in love with that place as well. Fortson enjoys being a foodie and everything she is so happy to be telling your stories on ABC7 Mornings and helping you get out the door from the Traffic Center.
