In 1996, while taking a break from local news, Liz was a field anchor/reporter for NBC News Channel during the Centennial Olympic Games. Liz has been honored with numerous journalism awards, including an Emmy for coverage of the devastating April 2011 tornadoes that struck Alabama.

She founded the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund and Liz Hurley Ribbon Run at Huntsville Hospital Foundation. The fund provides cutting-edge technology to the Huntsville Hospital and Madison Hospital Breast Centers offering diagnostic treatment to women throughout the country. The Fund also underwrites medications and expenses for low-income women and supports the Surviving and Thriving Program, a post-treatment support group. To date, the Fund has raised 5.4 million dollars.

Her diagnosis came on Aug. 6, 1998, two days after she had discovered a lump in the shower: Infiltrating ductal carcinoma, the doctors said.
