Leventhal spent nine weeks in Kuwait and Iraq in 2003 while serving with the 3rd L.A.R. of the US Marine Corps. He advanced across the border and joined the Sinners and Saints of the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines. Before the buildings collapsed, he arrived at the World Trade Center as one of the first reporters after the September 11 attacks. Later that year, with the start of the War on Terror, he went to Bahrain and Afghanistan, embedding with Marines at Camp Rhino and Kandahar Airport.

More recently, he offered live coverage of the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the killing of Osama bin Laden, and flooding in Louisiana. Over his 24 years of reporting, he spent a substantial amount of time covering the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill and has been sent to other natural disasters, including Katrina, Rita, Andrew, and Hugo. He traveled to Haiti for the disastrous 2010 earthquake and to Vatican City to cover Pope John Paul II’s passing, funeral, and appointment of his successor while being present in person.
