He portrayed the character of Greg Serrano in the final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a role originally performed by Santino Fontana. Additionally, he played Max in the 2020 musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. In 2022, he took on the titular role in the CBS drama So Helps Me, Todd. Astin’s first professional role was a minor part in the original Off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Spring Awakening, where he played Georg, a male student with a crush on his piano teacher.

He had brief solos in various songs, but he is particularly known for his powerful singing in the song “Touch Me.” While performing as Georg, Astin also worked on the film Hamlet 2, where he portrayed the character Rand Posin.

He performed “Raped in the Face” on the soundtrack of Spring Awakening, alongside Phoebe Strole, a fellow cast member from the musical, and the film’s star, Steve Coogan.
