When Johnson was 12 years old, she developed an interest in the weather, which expanded while she participated in Air Force ROTC training in high school. Johnson graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a bachelor’s degree. She worked at the National Climactic Data Center while in college and focused on atmospheric sciences. She began her career at The Weather Channel before relocating to Baltimore and working at Fox Channel 45, commonly known as WBFF. Later, she relocated to WMAR in Baltimore and WABC-TV in New York. Johnson departed WMAR in 1999, in part due to her inability to accept the size of the wage cut that was being offered at the time.
She acted as the Board of Enterprise Communication Chair for the American Meteorological Association, where she fostered the sharing of scientific data between academics, the government, and the general public. The Advisory Board, Eyes on the Environment, and Station Scientist were just a few of the AMS groups she served on. She also served as the MC for Senator Barack Obama’s Special Task Force on Climate Change in 2007 and on the Joint Center Advisory Committee on Climate Change in Washington, DC, from 2008 to 2013. Johnson graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a degree in atmospheric science. She is also the proud recipient of the coveted Fellow honor and television mark of excellence from the American Meteorological Society.
