Born into a farm family in rural Southwest Iowa, Austin and his two younger sisters, Alexis and Aubrianna, grew up in a small community that didn’t get much press. Sports crews covered “Friday night lights,” but they seldom ventured into his neck of the woods. So Austin got his love for sports and sportscasting by going to Iowa Cubs games (AAA to Chicago Cubs) with his family and watching SportsCenter with his father and grandpa.
In high school, Austin grabbed his catcher’s mitt and played baseball for a winter league team in Des Moines. But he had an ulterior motive: during those trips to the “big city”, Austin would also stop by one of the local TV stations after the games. Eventually, he convinced them to let him job-shadow sportscasters and help out wherever he could.
Austin graduated from Iowa Western Community College in May of 2022. During his time in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska, Austin covered many NJCAA National Championships while also working with FS1 and MECA (Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority) as a wireless sports production photographer.
He called play-by-play for high school teams with Fuller Digital Solutions and worked overnights as a nightcrawler for Omaha’s ABC affiliate. But his biggest influence during his college years was a man he calls “Pops,” Veteran Sportscaster J.J. Davis. He’s mentored many top market sportscasters and still keeps in touch with Austin.
Austin loves reporting on all sports in the Wiregrass. On any given day, you might find him covering football, basketball, volleyball, or even Karate, but if you want to know his real passion, just bring up “America’s pastime.” Austin believes baseball is life! During his free time, you might bump into him at one of his other passions: line and swing dancing.
