His first job out of college was not in meteorology, either, It was engineering. Geotechnical engineering. He worked at a firm that designed foundations for New York City skyscrapers.

One project sent him trekking deep below the streets of Manhattan to monitor the construction vibrations on the Subway tracks. Another had him approving pits for the construction of the foundation for a 44-story building. It was a fascinating job, but somewhere in his second year, he received an offer to attend UCLA’s grad school. This is where he entered the weather workforce.

he worked as a graduate student researcher studying two major storms: Hurricane Andrew and the 1993 Storm of the Century. And the icing on the cake? his UCLA diploma has the signature of then-Gov. It was the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department at UCLA. His job was to operate the computer models to see how likely it was to make these storms even stronger, all while earning his Master’s Degree.
