Simpson grew up in a small, rural North-Central Alabama community, Holly Pond, where he realized a strong faith in God, graduated from high school, and learned from hard-working people around him how to follow a dream. That dream led him to Mississippi State University where he graduated at the top of his class in 2001, and then it led him to Missouri, back to Mississippi, and then home again to Central Alabama in 2005.
He cannot tell you when he started loving weather because he has no memory of a time when it failed to fascinate and intrigue him. Following the weather, the dream tells one part of the story, but the best part of Jason’s dream came true when he met Lacey in 2009 at Veteran’s Park in Alabaster. Soon after their first child, Walt was born, Jason and his new family moved to Huntsville where he served as Chief Meteorologist at WHNT for a decade.
Shelby and Brody were born in Huntsville, but Brody’s serious health issues brought Jason and his family back to Birmingham for care at Children’s of Alabama. Jason and Lacey, along with three other North Alabama families who met because of their experience at Children’s came together to create a fundraiser to support the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center of Alabama at Children’s of Alabama;
it is called Castin’ ‘N’ Catchin’, and through 2022, they raised nearly a million dollars to support heart research and care at the hospital here in Birmingham. In 2021, Jason took a break from TV life and became an engineer for a defense company in Huntsville, but he and his family are excited to be coming home to WVTM 13 and Central Alabama!
