Newland graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William and Mary with a double major in English and Government. She started her career in the news at WRIC in Richmond, Virginia, where she grew up. She was the first reporter in any news market worldwide to obtain a video that appeared to show pop star Justin Bieber’s drag race down a Miami Beach street.
Newland covered the reopening of the 35-W bridge after it collapsed, at KSTP in Minneapolis where she worked for 3 years, she reported from the floor of the 2008 Republican National Convection and spent plenty of time in subzero temperatures for blizzard coverage. From 2004 to 2008 Newland worked at WBBH in Fort Myers, Florida, She covered the historic 2005 hurricane season.
She was honored by the Associated Press for her year-long investigation that ended with the arrest and conviction of a Cape Coral councilman and his subsequent removal from office.
